Citizen Science Month is a worldwide celebration of how people with wide-ranging interests and experiences are doing activities that support learning about animals, plants, the environment, health, astronomy, and many other topics scientifically. Anyone can get involved with fun citizen science activities, whether from home, out bush, or elsewhere.

During Citizen Science Month in the past two years, a global goal was set for the citizen science community to complete many "Acts of Science". Such Acts included, for example, sharing observations, collecting data, or analysing results to support making scientific discoveries. In 2024, folks from 126 countries logged more than 1 million Acts of Science in just three weeks. In 2025, Acts of Science exceeded 3 million by the end of April!

This year, we are setting the first Australian citizen science community goal of 100,000 Acts of Science in April.

Ways to Participate

You can engage in Acts of Science on your own or support others engaging in events and projects through libraries, schools, universities, agencies, community organisations, and more.

Whether joining existing projects, running an event, or managing a project during Citizen Science Month, feel free to showcase your Acts of Science on social media! You can do this with hashtags such as #CitizenScienceMonth, #ActsofScience, #CitSciOz and #SciStarter. You can also tag @SciStarter for a chance to be featured on the global SciStarter.org website. Here are three ways to get involved:

Join Projects &

Share Acts

1) Find Australia-connected and global online projects in the SciStarter Australia project finder. Many projects require nothing more than a smartphone.

2) Share your activities each week as Acts of Science (e.g., submitted nature, classifications of photos, video, or audio).

Share Events & Report Participation

1) Promote events featuring citizen science that you manage via social media, including the hashtags above.

2) Share event participation as Acts of Science (e.g., observations from all participants, how many people attended a webinar).

Make an Australian Project Findable

1) Check if a project you manage is listed in the SciStarter Australia project finder. Note the project needs to have an Australian connection (e.g., Australian-made, people within Australia can participate, or features an Australian topic).

2) If already listed, you are good to go. Otherwise, add your project to SciStarter Australia if it has an Australia connection. It will be approved and findable by potential participants and broader audiences upon approval.

An Example Participation Plan

This month I plan to:

  1. Look extra carefully for big and small wild critters while gardening and on walks, and submit pictures of the treasures I encounter.

  2. Jump into some online projects to play games, identify animals, listen to sounds, and more, which support the analysis of scientific data.

  3. If my schedule allows, join a group of people locally to participate in the worldwide City Nature Challenge (see if your city is listed https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/)

  4. Join some additional opportunities as I learn about them.

  5. Report my Acts of Science each week, which I will have tracked as I go.

A Shared Global Effort

Citizen Science Month is coordinated by SciStarter.org and Arizona State University in collaboration with libraries, nonprofits, science associations, and media organisations around the world. Key global partners include SciStarter Australia and other citizen science networks in Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Brazil.
