A growing international citizen science movement is bringing together people with diverse experiences, interests, and backgrounds to do science. April is Citizen Science Month, which is a worldwide celebration and the perfect time to raise awareness of your citizen science endeavours!

In the last few years, a Citizen Science Month goal has been set for communities to complete "Acts of Science" such as observations, collecting data, or analysing results to support science worldwide.  In 2024, the citizen science community from 126 countries logged more than one million Acts of Science in just three weeks. In 2025, participants exceeded three million Acts by the end of April. This year, we are setting the Australian citizen science community goal of 200,000 Acts of Science in April. Our goal is based on population and contributes to the global goal of 2.5 million acts. We invite individuals, libraries, schools, universities, agencies, and community organisations to contribute to any type of science. If you manage a citizen science project that people in Australia can participate in, make it easy for potential participants to find by adding it to the SciStarter Australia project finder.

Easy Ways to Participate

  1. Find Australian-made and globally accessible projects by searching the SciStarter Australia project finder. Many projects require nothing more than a smartphone.

  2. Share your Acts of Science by reporting them on Australia's Citizen Science Month page.

  3. Showcase your Acts of Science on social media with hashtags #ActsofScience and #CitSciOz, as well as tags @SciStarter and @CitSciOz for a chance to be featured on the SciStarter.org website and shared on Australian Citizen Science Association social media channels!

A Shared Global Effort

Citizen Science Month is coordinated by SciStarter.org and Arizona State University in collaboration with libraries, nonprofits, science associations, and media organisations around the world. Key global partners include SciStarter Australia and other citizen science networks in Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Brazil.
