What is citizen science?
Citizen science is real science done by people like you! Scientists and researchers need volunteers to help close data gaps. Whether you share pictures from your garden to help track plant and animal species populations or classify images from telescopes to identify asteroids, you can contribute!

What's One Million Acts of Science
People all over the world are preparing to share their observations about the natural world to contribute more than 1,000,000 Acts of Science during Citizen Science Month. The global SciStarter organisation, Arizona State University, and partners, including SciStarter Australia, are encouraging people from all walks of life to collect, share, or review data to help accelerate important scientific research. Taking part in most projects does not typically require knowledge of science, so if you are looking for a fun activity, consider having a look for projects that strike your fancy. If you run a project, make sure it's listed on SciStarter Australia so people can find it this month!
How to Get Involved
Visit CitizenScienceMonth.org. Whether you want to participate in projects, help others get involved, or feature your own project, there's a way for everyone to engage.
Go to the global SciStarter to create or log into your account. This will allow you to find, save, and prepare for April with projects that interest you. With an account, you can also submit projects to SciStarter Australia (and SciStarter globally).
Participate in April! Between April 1st - April 30th, 2025, join any projects or events featured on CitizenScienceMonth.org. You’ll also find a curated calendar of thematic events and projects that can be done from anywhere.
Report your Acts before the end of April, either using:
The global SciStarter will include your name on the site to recognize your efforts! All throughout April, you can watch the number of Acts of Science grow on CitizenScienceMonth.org and celebrate when we reach ONE MILLION! If you would like to share One Million Acts of Science in your networks, feel free to use resources from the SciStarter.org Social Media Toolkit.
Highlights from Citizen Science Month 2024
Half a million volunteers from 126 countries contributed more than One Million Acts of Science through nearly 1,000 scientific research projects and events in April. One-third of participants joined TWO or MORE projects or events! By April 24, 2024, volunteers around the world amassed One Million Acts of Science. A total of 1.129 million Acts were tallied at the end of the month. We’re aiming for more in 2025!
People can participate in a huge variety of easy-to-join research projects that can be done from anywhere, and many are online, ranging from human health (Stall Catchers) and astronomy (Globe at Night) to biodiversity (iNaturalist) and climate change (iSeeChange). Most projects only require a smartphone to log the data.
